joe biden is gaf prone. he has had some interesting comments about the middle class the last four years and other interesting comments. paul ryan is someone who even though the democrats have tried to sully his reputation and hang the medicare issue around his neck i think the republicans roll out what mitt romney did, paul ryan as a good reputation and he is not gaff pro like joe biden. that is the contrast for tonight. gerri: let's talk about the presidential election for a second. the contenders, mitt romney and obama. romney is getting a bum from his performance in the debate. when you look at the swing states, seems to be doing a little better. is this sustainable and does it put more pressure on ryan to have a really good night? >> it is not sustainable. i have a specific reason for that. when you look at this data when you see is the romney campaign was a great performance by romney and a bad one by the president. that shows up and there has been movement. the bulk of a movement has been with women. i

i think if you joe biden that the pressure is not on you. if you're 69, you're set in your ways. but he tends to say things without thinking but has to be mindful of that. i don't know if this debate will change voters' minds. i'll look to next week for that but tonight it should be great because they are fine speakers and it's a chance to contrast. >> stay away from the numbers -- >> reintroduce himself. the last time voters got a chance to get a look at him on the national stage was at the republican convention. this will be an opportunity for him to introduce himself to more engage voters especially undecided in other states that haven't had visits from the republican party. we'll see. >> should be 90 minutes of fun, right? >> sure. >> joe tuman, thank you for joining us. you can watch the debate right here on cbs 5. our special live coverage begins at 6:00. i'm grace lee, cbs 5. >> thank you. >>> a reminder the presidential candidates are answering our questions online. your questions on cbssf.com. they are tackling a different issue every day. and today's topic by the way ed

joe biden does not. because he believes that a faith that has so little regard for the poor and the marginalized is no faith at all. script tour teaches us nobody is perfect, neither paul ryan nor the vice president. but in mathews gospel christ warns us about being deceived. and the test is not what you say, it's what you do. watch out for false prophets, they come to you in sheep's clothing. but inwardly they are ferocious

tonight's face-off between vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan is getting a lot more attention than vice presidential debates usually get. the obama campaign is looking to biden to stop the momentum mitt romney has enjoyed since the debate in denver, which governor romney was widely perceived to have won. ryan's job is to keep romney's momentum rolling. today's national gallup poll of likely voters shows governor romney with a slender lead of one point over the president. of course, that's within the margin of error so it's essentially a tie. tonight's debate isality centre college in danville, kentucky. nancy cordes and jan crawford are there. first we'll go to nancy, covering the vice president's campaign. nancy. >> reporter: scorkt the vice president arrived here in kentucky today after self days of intense preparation in his home state of delaware and several people there with him told us the president's weak performance in his own debate didn't so much change the strategy as raise the stakes and thails the vice president is very well aware he needs to have a better night t

if joe biden had one job at this event, it was to pump up the base. he did that job this week after obama's disappointing debate. and we saw obama here this week. this was a very busy week in politics. and it is all about enthusiasm in the base in places like san francisco, northern california. if voters here on the democratic side are not enthusiastic about getting out there for obama, if he doesn't have -- if they don't have his back, he's got trouble in congressional races and fund-raising and everything else. an we saw his events in san francisco this week. we were inside a couple of those events. and, boy, they turned out, they were very excited and he seemed much more fired up. i have to say the last couple of times we've seen him, he has seemed a little too down key, low key, almost sleep walking it seems through some of these events. this week in san francisco in the wake of that debate, he got such terrible reviews, i think he's gotten the message and certainly joe biden has gotten the message that they better pump up the energy. >> san franc

people who thought that joe biden was kind of a rude guy before the debate, they still think. that reinforced it. do you really think that the 17 undecided voters left in iowa or ohio who saw that debate and went that joe biden, man, he sure is mean. i'm not voting for him. >> it probably didn't have a great impact. actually, i do think the debates have mattered an awful lot.
